Sazerac debuts wheat whiskey from Barton

US spirits producer Sazerac has added a Sweet Wheat whiskey to its 1792 range, created at the group’s Barton 1792 Distillery.

More expressions of 1792 will be released over the coming years

Aged for eight years in warehouses in Bardstown, Kentucky, the whiskey is made using a recipe of corn, wheat, malted barley and a yeast strain specific to the distillery.

“Using wheat instead of rye gives the taste profile a softer and more delicate flavour,” said Ken Pierce, director of distillation and quality assurance.

The flavour is described as offering “hints of caramel, vanilla, and ripe fruit” with “notes of deep oak tannins and tobacco”.

Bottled at 45.6% abv, 1792 Sweet Wheat will be distributed in outlets across the US at an RRP of US$32.99.

The distillery is set to release further expressions of 1792 over the coming years.

Marketing director, Kris Comstock, said: “We have some remarkable whiskies aging in Bardstown. We’re excited to unveil them over the next several years.”

Last year, Sazerac increased production capacity at Barton 1792 Distillery with the implementation of new equipment.
