Indie distillery creates Ireland’s ‘first’ potato vodka

A family-run distillery in County Antrim has produced what is believed to be Ireland’s first potato vodka.

The new addition is described as “buttery and well rounded”

Hughes Craft Distillery Ltd, which is run by husband and wife team Stuart and Barbara Hughes, has released RubyBlue Vodka; the first in Ireland to be distilled from potatoes.

The couple have been producing a range of fruit liqueurs under their RubyBlue range since 2010, which consists of blackcurrant, cranberry, blueberry and chilli pepper.

The new addition is described as “buttery and well rounded” with “a heartening earthiness” and a “long, clean finish”.

Stuart Hughes told the Belfast Telegraph: “We have been seeking to strengthen our range and distribution in Britain, Ireland and further afield for some time and saw a gap in the market for a potato vodka.

“We also saw an opportunity from the developing trend, particularly in high-end hotels, cocktail bars and restaurants, for craft spirits with provenance and outstanding taste.”

The vodka is bottled at 40% abv, while an RRP has not yet been confirmed.
