Absolut opens hub for sustainable packaging

A “Creative Space” made from recycled vodka transport containers will act as a hub for innovators to help The Absolut Company find sustainable packaging solutions.

The Absolut Company has invited 16 innovators to take part in the hackathon

The Absolut Company has invited 16 innovators – made up of designers, engineers and students – to take part in a “hackathon” in the Creative Space, which is built from old containers formerly used to transport Absolut Vodka around Liljeholmen, south of Stockholm and to the company headquarters in Sweden.

The participants will work together in four groups to find new ways to reduce environmental impact, encourage more people to recycle their glass bottles, and find creative uses for used Absolut Vodka bottles.

Once the hackathon is complete, a winning proposal will be selected, with a view to putting the ideas presented into action.

“Sustainability is a given part of our operations and a challenge that we are facing every day. By inviting innovators to be co-creators in our process we are hoping to open up for new approaches and to challenge ourselves,” said Anna Schreil, director of product development at The Absolut Company.

“Creative Space is also a great venue where the participants are given tools to elaborate new ideas, to learn more and to share experiences.”

Afterwards, Creative Space will be shipped to another location and invite members of the public to join in the challenge to create sustainable solutions.

Earlier this month Absolut Vodka launched a limited edition bottle design featuring the colours of the original gay pride flag for sale exclusively at UK retailer Harvey Nichols.
