The Queen recognises global success of WSET
By Becky PaskinThe Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) has been recognised for its international success with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
Ian Harris, CEO of WSET, claimed the UK’s position as a leading wine importer helped the group establish itself as the world’s leading education providerThe educational body, which teaches over 50,000 people across the world every year, was given an international trade accolade in the awards’ 50th anniversary year.
The WSET, which was founded in 1969 as a UK-only training body, has grown to become the world leader in wine and spirits education, delivering courses in 18 languages across over 60 countries.
The number of candidates sitting exams outside the UK now accounts for over 75% of all students.
Ian Harris, CEO of the WSET, said: “As a country with a historically low domestic production, the UK has always been one of the world’s largest importers of wine. This exposure to different styles and grape varieties has given the British a rich understanding of wines and spirits from all over the world – making us well placed to be world leaders in the industry’s education.
“Originally founded as an organisation for training the UK trade, the team at WSET has worked tirelessly to expand its influence overseas and now attracts the interest of keen amateurs as well as seasoned professionals across the globe. It is fantastic to have our efforts acknowledged by HM The Queen.”
Launched in 1965, the awards are bestowed upon British businesses in the fields of innovation, international trade and sustainable development by HM The Queen.
Around 140 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise have been awarded this year. All winners have been presented with a crystal bowl and invited to attend a reception at Buckingham Palace in July.
