Forgotten Glenfiddich whisky bottles fetch £17k
By Amy HopkinsFourteen bottles of Glenfiddich Scotch whisky that were left forgotten in a Scottish mansion for more than 60 years have smashed their pre-sale auction estimation, fetching £17,000.
A collection of rare Glenfiddich Pure Special Malt has sold for £17,000 at auctionIt was reported earlier this month that the hoard of Glenfiddich Special Pure Malt had been discovered in the cellar of a Perthshire house, and were estimated to fetch at least £10,000 at auction.
The bottles, some of which were still wrapped in their original tissue paper, were valued between £600 and £800 each.
Sold by auction house Lindsay Burns & Company, the lot was purchased by a number of different collectors.
At the time the auction was announced, Lindsay Burns & Company’s auctioneer Nicky Burns, told The Courier: “Some people will want to buy a bottle to drink, some will see it as an investment.
“They are rare survivors, they come from the 50s when Glenfiddich was one of the few malts available.”
Rare Scotch whiskies have proven to be highly investable items at auctions across the world, often greatly exceeding their presale valuations.
It was revealed earlier this year that the amount of investable Scotch whisky sold at auction reached a record high in 2014, soaring 68% compared to the previous year.
