Conservatives drink spirits more than other parties
Conservative voters prefer drinking spirits more than any other UK political party, a recent poll has shown.
Chancellor George Osborne will announce whether a 2% cut in alcohol duty will be enforced in next week’s Budget
The poll, commissioned by the Wine and Spirits Trade Association (WSTA) and conducted by YouGov, showed that 53% of Conservatives prefer drinking spirits.
Close behind them are Liberal Democrats (50%), followed by Labour and UKIP (45%) and those who say they are “undecided” (37%).
The survey comes ahead of next week’s Budget, due to be delivered by Chancellor George Osborne, which the spirits industry hopes will include a 2% cut in wine and spirits duty.
Overall, the statistics showed that wine is the most popular alcoholic drink of choice for 69% of Conservatives and 72% of Liberal Democrats.
The WSTA hopes the Chancellor will take heed of the figures claims that a 2% cut in duty could be very popular and “swing” voters in this year’s General Election.
“It is important that parties take our industry seriously,” said Miles Beale, chief executive of the WSTA.
“This is particularly important for George Osborne to remember as he looks to deliver his Budget in less than a week’s time.”
