Bar terrace goes booze-free after fatal fall

The roof terrace of a UK sports bar has been declared an alcohol-free zone after a man fell to his death.

Andrew White died after falling from the roof terrace of Riley’s Bar in Devon

Andrew White, 32, died on 5 July last year after he fell from the railings of the terrace at Riley’s Bar in Devon, the Torquay Herald Express reports.

An inquest recently heard that White died after a prank “ended tragically”. He was dared by friend to sit on the railings of the terrace, but fell backwards.

Another customer attempted to help White, but fell from the roof himself, injuring his back.

Friend Billy Whitley, who dared White to sit on the railings, told the coroner’s court: “I did not believe he would actually do it. He was holding on to the top of the railing and he must have leant back too far.”

Herald Express also reports that a council inspector confirmed the railings were of legal height, adding the bar’s smoking terrace was now an alcohol free zone.

Whitley, who was twice over the drink drive limit, had also been smoking cannabis, a pathologist found.

The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
