Scottish university first to offer alcohol-free rooms

St Andrew’s University in Fife, Scotland, is thought to be the first Scottish university to offer alcohol-free accommodation to under-graduatesThe flats, which accommodate up to 5 people, will cater for students with religious beliefs or medical conditions that don’t allow drinking.
New students will be asked to tick an option on their entry forms if they would like place in one of the en-suite flats, situated at David Russell Apartments in Fife Park.
Pat Mathewson, president of St Andrews Students’ Association, told the BBC: “Our residential services have decided they will offer a small section and then see what the uptake is like.
“We’re always in favour of anything that will make our students more comfortable.
“By no means are any students going to be forced into student accommodation they haven’t asked for.”
Earlier this month it was revealed that Ivy League college, Dartmouth, plans to ban hard liquor (alcohol containing 15% abv or more) from its campus in an effort to curb alcohol-related abuse and binge drinking.
