Scotch Whisky Action Fund seeks applicants

Scottish projects that work to tackle alcohol related harm are now eligible to apply for funding from the Scotch Whisky Action Fund, which has reopened applications for a second year.

The Scotch Whisky Association has joined a network for the protection of products with geographical indication (GI) status

Managed by an independent charity Foundation Scotland, the fund was founded by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) in 2013, which pledged £500,000 to combat alcohol issues over a four-year period.

It is designed to support and develop a range of initiatives relating to young people under the age of 18, families and communities.

“We are committed to tackling alcohol misuse,” said David Frost, CEO of the SWA. “We want to support projects that are contributing towards preventing and reducing misuse among young people, communities and families.

“We hope a wide range of initiatives will apply for funding.”

In 2014, a total of eight local initiatives benefited from funding spanning from Islay to Aberdeenshire, and comprised new and established projects.

“We were encouraged by the number of innovative projects who received awards last year; You Decide Ltd in Port Glasgow will work with secondary school pupils to identify ways in which young people can play an active role in reducing alcohol related harm.

“And, Carers of West Dunbartonshire will offer an alcohol education programme and an emotional support system which will help address the needs of carers in families affected by alcohol misuse, a group which are frequently overlooked.

“We hope their success will inspire many more to apply this year.”

Professor Dame Joan Stringer will chair the awards panel and the closing date for applications is 30 June.
