By Melita KielyA new certification programme has been launched in the US to provide some Bourbon expertise to workers in Louisville’s hospitality industry.
Hospitality employees in Louisville can brush up on their Bourbon knowledge with a new certification programmeDesigned to promote Kentucky’s Bourbon culture, Stave & Thief Society will enable restaurant, bar, hotel and retail employees to become certified Bourbon stewards through the standardised training programme.
The curriculum has been outlined by Distilled Spirits Epicenter and includes workshops, learning materials and exams to equip hospitality workers with the skills needed to explain the city’s Bourbon history, discuss Kentucky brands and recommend products based on customers’ taste preferences.
The Stave & Thief Society came about as part of a Bourbon & Food Work Group comprising business executives, chefs, distillers and tourism leaders gathered by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer to “further the city’s image as a top food and beverage destination”.
According to Mayor Fischer’s Bourbon & Food Work Group report: “For Louisville to become the heartbeat of Bourbon culture, the front line of hospitality staff must be well-trained to answer questions and provide history and other details of this signature industry.
“The goal is for every hospitality worker to be able to expertly discuss Bourbon.”
Enrollment is now open and first year membership costs are US$1,000, which includes study guides and management training with an additional annual fee thereafter to retain membership status.
