Smirnoff Vodka is biggest-selling branded supermarket product
By Melita KielyLitre bottles of Smirnoff Vodka have topped the list of Britain’s best-selling branded supermarket products.
Smirnoff Vodka came first in a list of Britain’s best-selling branded supermarket productsAccording to the list compiled by food industry analysts IRI for The Grocer, Britons spend £191.4 million on Smirnoff Red.
The only other alcoholic product to make it onto the list was whisky brand The Famous Grouse, which ranked in seventh place at £130 million.
“We like salty things, we like alcohol and sugary drinks – products which could never be described as healthy,” Tom Eales, of IRI, told the Metro.
Each item was rated based on how much consumers pay for products, however tax accounts for a significant portion of the cost of a bottle of spirit.
In June, new research suggested UK supermarkets were responding to increases in alcohol taxes by subsidising cheaper products and shifting more of the tax hikes onto more expensive products.
However, last month, the WSTA thanked George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, for his decision to scrap the UK’s alcohol tax escalator in the 2014 Budget.
Ranking behind Smirnoff Vodka in second and third place were Walkers Crisps at £179m, and Pringles at £165m.
