Since a code of conduct came into effect on 12 September, there has been a citywide crackdown on illegal transportation of alcohol.

A total of 27 squads of the state excise department have been deployed across the island city and suburbs, resulting in 500 arrests and 14,128 litres of illegal alcohol being seized.

One particular case in the suburbs saw Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs1.61 lakh seized on 29 September from Juhu bus depot.

Four people were arrested: Rajesh Chaudhary, 30, Ashish Chamriya, 19, Walji patel, 40, and Sanjay Ahir, 28.

The alcohol seized has been submitted for chemical testing.

“The main areas which we are keeping an eye on are Sion-Koliwada, Dadar and Worli,” said R.S. parmar, superintendent State Excise City, as reported by Mid-Day.

Earlier this year, India’s biggest alcohol consuming state Kerala proposed a partial prohibition, but was put on hold by the country’s top court last month.

Meanwhile, last year more than 40 people were killed as a result of toxic bootleg alcohol.
