Texas holds fire on alcohol sales at gun shows

Plans to allow alcohol to be sold at gun shows in Texas, US, could be dropped following hundreds of negative responses.

Plans to allow alcohol to be sold at gun shows in Texas have been met with negative responses

Staff at the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission have recommended withdrawing last month’s proposal at the panel’s next meeting scheduled to take place today (23 September), according to reports by Portland Press Herald.

If agreed, the new rules would have come with strict requirements to disable all firearms on display, forbid live ammunition and prohibit any buyers from taking possession of their weapons on site.

The National Rifle Association condemned the proposals last month, warning the new law would have a “devastating impact” on events.

Currently, the law states that venues serving alcohol must suspend sales throughout the preparation and duration of any gun show.

Texas also prohibits concealed handgun licence holders from carrying their weapons into bars.

Earlier this year Louisiana lawmakers passed a new piece of legislation permitting guns to be taken into alcohol-serving restaurants.
