A dram of The Macallan 64 Year Old single malt Scotch whisky sold for US$64,000Los Angeles based Blaine Vess, CEO of StudyMode – an ed-tech company focused on helping students do well at school – bought the dram on Saturday in aid of Liberty in North Korea (LiNK), which works with North Koreans to accelerate change in their country.
Vess was drinking in The Macallan’s £10 cocktail lounge in Montage Beverly Hills when he bought the drink, and The Macallan has promised to donate proceeds from the sale to Vess’ chosen charity, as reported by West Side Today.
The Macallan 64 Year Old is bottled at 42.5% abv and comprises three single malts filled in 1942, 1945 and 1946 and is the only mini-bottle of its kind.
“I want to wait to drink it until the North Korean people are free – and I believe that will happen in my lifetime,” Vess told the news site.
“I’m honoured to support LiNK in promoting freedom and empowerment for the North Korean people, and grateful to The Macallan for their generosity in giving the proceeds from this valuable whisky to charity.
“I hope what we’re doing here today will raise awareness for what LiNK is doing in North Korea and encourage other to support their efforts as well.”
In July, a full cask of The Macallan Scotch whisky exceeded its pre-sale estimate by fetching almost HK$2 million at auction in Hong Kong, setting a new world record for a whisky cask sale.
