Whisky fans raise $10k for homeless charity

Whisky lovers have raised more than US$10,000 for The Coalition for the Homeless – a charity working to prevent and eliminate homelessness.

The inaugural annual Bourbon Mixer event was organised by the Bourbon Brotherhood and the Whisky Chicks, two organisations formed earlier this year to provide “unique” Bourbon experiences in Louisville, US.

Held at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience in Louisville, the 135 attendees were given the chance to tour the museum, take part in a tasting performance and mingle with guests including the president of Heaven Hill Distilleries, Max Shapira, and Bourbon historians and authors, Mike Veach, Fred Minnick and Bernie Lubbers.

Mayor Greg Fischer also attended the event, and stressed the importance of the Bourbon industry to the Louisville economy.

“There are approximately 200 homeless veterans in Louisville on any given night and just over 900 persons who reported to be homeless veterans in Louisville throughout 2013,” said Natalie Harris, executive director of The Coalition for the Homeless, as reported by Voice Tribune.

“This is a very manageable problem that we as a community can solve if we are working together to make it happen.”
