UK’s most northerly gin sells out in 48 hours

Mainland Britain’s most northerly gin distillery has sold out of its first batch a week before production was due to start.

Rock Rose Gin, produced at the Dunnet Distillery, has proved a hit before it’s even produced

Dunnet Distillers completed work on a new gin distillery in the Bay of Dunnet in Caithness, Scotland this week.

However the first 700 bottles of its Rock Rose gin, which is due to be bottled in ceramic bottles in the next few days, have already sold out.

“Well that was amazing!!” a message posted on the distillery’s website read. “Our very first batch sold out in under 48 hours – that was incredibly quick and very manic behind the scenes too dealing with lots of enquiries!”

Founded by Martin and Claire Murray, Dunnet will produce around 10,000 bottles of Rock Rose gin a year, with a new batch produced every month.

The gin features rhodiola rosea, sea buckthorn, rowan berries, blueberries and verbena among its botanicals, as well as juniper, cardamom and coriander seeds.

The botanicals are infused overnight before being distilled using a vapour basket.

The bottles of Rock Rose are expected to alter slightly year-on-year due to the climate’s effect on local botanicals.

Speaking to Herald Scotland, Claire Murray said: “Each year we will create a new vintage. Our Caithness botanicals are dependent on our climate, resulting in a truly hand crafted gin that will change year on year, but is still undeniably Rock Rose.”
