Rare SMWS bottling to headline whisky auction
By Amy HopkinsThe first whisky ever bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) will join a number of rare Macallan bottlings in a Glasgow auction this week.
The first ever whisky bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, an eight-yea-old Glenfarclas, will head to auction tomorrowThe SMWS’s eight-year-old cask strength Glenfarclas whisky is is expected to fetch between £1,000 and £2,000 at McTear’s Rare & Collectable Whisky Auction tomorrow (Wednesday 27 August).
A number of other SMWS bottlings, including a 10-year-old Highland Park 21-year-old Scotch Hakusu single malt Japanese whisky, will also be available.
Leading offerings from The Macallan distillery will be The Macallan 1946 Select Reserve, aged 52 years, which has been valued at between £5,000 and £7,000.
A 1964 1st Edition Black Bowmore will also go under the hammer and is expected to fetch between £2,500 and £3,500, along with a bottle of 38-year-old Bowmore which has been valued between £2,000 and £3,000.
“We have some fantastic bottles coming up in our August auction and it is great to see the Scotch Malt Whisky Society featuring so well,” said McTear’s whisky specialist Dominic Hughes.
“It is very rare to see a first release from the ‘Society’ coming to auction and we are already seeing interest rise in this particular bottle.”
In May this year, McTear’s held an auction for one of the world’s largest collection of The Macallan Scotch whisky, valued at £100,000.
