The most famous cocktail and bar show in the world Tales of the Cocktail has now come to an end, with its Spirited Awards ceremony paying due plaudits to pioneers in the industry.

One such category was the Best High Volume Cocktail Bar Spirited Award, where the large-scale establishments across the globe are recognised for their quality, inventiveness and speed.

This shortlist demonstrates that large bars no longer shun quality for numbers, with a host of classy establishments driving credibility and challenging old perceptions.

Big Easy Covent Garden, London

The Chelsea branch has held a long-standing reputation and the relatively new opening in Covent Garden is just as impressive. Upstairs offers a nine metre long bar with more than 500 bottles to choose from and a menu brimming with BBQ meat, pulled pork, lobsters and dozens of sides. Downstairs The Shelter bar offers something a little more serious and refined with its weekly changing cocktail menu and signature drinks that aren’t available upstairs.

Black Angel’s Bar, Prague

One of the most famous bars in the Czech Republic, Black Angel’s Bar has no shortage of style. Based in the 2nd basement of Hotel U Prince, This speakeasy-style bar gives a decadent edge to its inspirational rough and ready saloon bars of the Prohibition era. Somewhat of an exclusive location, the bar has a strict “no videos, no pictures” rule.

Brain child of mixologist Joel Fraser, Singapore’s The Cufflink Club is described as “an integrated concept of charcuterie and cocktails”, serving cocktails alongside cold cut meats. The bar is set in a restored shop house in the historical district of China Town and is known for its consistent innovativeness, changing its cocktail menu every two months.

Said to “promote the experience of drinking, instead of the drinking itself”, cool jazz bar Dvars in Amsterdam is a sprawling venue with three separate bars and copious amounts of seating space. Dvar’s cocktail menu features an array of signature drinks, seasonal mixes, twists on classic cocktails and a selection of sharing punch bowls.

Simultaneously large and intimate speakeasy-style bar Eau de Vie, in Melbourne, continues to dominate the city’s cosmspolitan cocktail scene. Eau de Vie’s cocktail menu is historically-focused and divides its cocktails by era. The bar also has a strong gastro focus, offering not only an array of delicious tapas food, but also food and cocktail pairing experiences.

Frank’s, Buenos Aires

Frank’s bar brings the speakeasy vie to Buenos Aires, with its bow-tied bartenders, classic cocktails and a passcode-for-entry policy. Burlesque dancers adorn podiums and house-made spirits flow freely in this homage to the Roaring 20s. To enjoy it you need only enter a secret code at the front door, disguised as a telephone box.

The Lobo Plantation, Sydney

Sydney’s bar scene has moved decidedly more up-market in recent years, but despite a high competition, The Lobo Plantation basement stands out from the crowd. With a focus on rum, the bar channels the Caribbean and the decaying grandeur of a plantations house. It is named after powerful sugar cane producer and financier Julio Lobo. Cocktails include the Beetroot Sour and Pear Treacle.

Co-founded by cocktail maverick JJ Goodman, London Cocktail Club is a name known throughout London, with bars in Oxford Circus, Goodge St and Covent Garden, and Shaftesbury Avenue all of which feature a different core theme.
