Connacht’s first distillery in over 100 years opens
The first whiskey distillery in Connacht, Ireland, for more than 100 years will be opened today bringing 18 new jobs to the area.
The Nephin Distillery is the first whiskey distillery in Connacht in more than 100 years
Founded by husband and wife team Paul and Jude Davis, the Nephin Distillery will be opened by Irish Fine Gael politician, Enda Kenny.
Situated between the Nephin Mountains and Lough Conn in Lahardane County Mayo, the Nephin Distillery will distil Irish peated single malt whiskey.
“We will be targeting the premium and super premium side of the market but we will look to use the Mayo links abroad with the States being a premium market place,” Paul Davis told the Mayo News.
“The locals here are very excited and we hope to employ local people and to bring 18 jobs to a place like Lahardane is the equivalent to 500 jobs in Castlebar.
“We have integrated into the village and the distillery will be here long after we are gone.”
The couple expect production to be up and running by the end of 2015.
