Waitrose to start selling Indian whisky
By Becky PaskinBritish supermarket Waitrose is extending its range of whiskies with 12 new varieties from around the world, including brands from India and Taiwan.
Waitrose stores will soon begin selling Indian whisky, as well as whisky from Sweden and TaiwanThe chain intends to introduce the extended range of world whisky to meet soaring demand from consumers.
It claims sales of American whiskey grew 39% and Irish whiskey 22% in the last year.
Herchelle Perez Terrado, spirits buyer at Waitrose said: “One of the reasons whisky is so popular is the huge amount of variety found between different distilleries, ages and countries – there is always a new variety to try.”
The new whiskies joining Waitrose’s shelves hail from Japan, Taiwan, Sweden and India, as well as a selection of small batch Bourbons from the US.
They will join the supermarket’s existing range from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Canada and America.
“Our customers love exploring spirits from different countries and will relish the opportunity to try a whisky from an expected whisky producing country such as Sweden.”
The supermarket attributes the UK’s growing interest in world whisky to the growth of dedicated whisky bars across London, such as Japanese specialist Bincho in Soho and Scotch favourite The Albannach in Trafalgar Square.
