Umami spirit to be unveiled in Paris
By Amy HopkinsUmami, thought to be the world’s first caper-based spirit, will be officially launched at the Cocktails Spirits show in Paris this weekend.
Umami, a spirit made from caper distillate and neutral grain spirit is to be unveiled in Paris this weekendProduced by French boutique distillery Audemus Spirits, Umami is a savoury spirit created by combining a caper distillate made from two types of Sicilian capers with neutral grain spirit.
Made in small batches of 500, producers claim that spirit is ideal to mix with savoury, dry and vegetable-based cocktails.
Audemus founder Miko Abouaf said he recognised an “underused niche” of spirits specifically created for savoury cocktails.
Umami was launched at the same time as Audemus’ Pink Pepper Gin, which features botanicals including pink peppercorns, juniper, cardamon and honey.
“My aim is to create atypical and awesome spirits,” said Abouaf. “This is all part of the same mentality of boosting the dynamism of the spirits industry.”
Following its launch in French and UK markets this spring, Umami will eventually be available to other markets through audemus-spirits.com.
