The Macallan and Glenfiddich 50YOs to auction

Two rare 50-year-old bottles of The Macallan and Glenfiddich Scotch whisky are heading to auction in Scotland next month.

Two rare 50-year-old bottles of Glenfiddich and The Macallan Scotch will star in Bonhams’ Edinburgh auction next month

A bottle of Glenfiddich 50 Year Old and The Macallan Millennium Decanter, also 50-years-old, will lead Bonhams whisky auction in Edinburgh on 18 June.

The Glennfiddich, which is presented in a wooden case accompanied by a certificate of authentication, was bottled in 1991 and is numbered ‘5’.

The Macallan Millennium, stored in a Caithness glass decanter with a stopper and fitted oak presentation case, was distilled in 1949 and bottled in 1999 in celebration of the Millennium.

Both lots are estimated to sale for £12,000-£14,000.

Two bottles of Chivas Regal 25 Year Old bearing the inscription ‘Purveyors to His Majesty King George V and to Her Majesty Queen Alexandria, Chivas Brothers, Aberdeen’, also feature.

Other lots of Chivas dating back to the early 20th Century will also be available, including one stored in a green glass bottle which pre-dates the First World War and has the words ‘Chivas Brothers, Whisky, Aberd’ embossed into the top of its wax capsule. It is estimated to fetch £3,500-£4,500.

One other bears a label reading ‘Imported by Fred L. Meyers & Son, The Sugar Wharf, Kingston, Jamaica, B. W. I (British West Indies)’ and another capsule embossed with the words ‘Chivas Aberdeen’ is estimated at £2,500-£3,500.

“In a strong sale these bottles stand out,” said Bonhams whisky specialist Martin Green.

“The Chivas Regal bottles are particularly interesting. The brand was created in the early 1900s specifically for export to the United States to satisfy a growing demand for luxury products.

“Chivas Regal 25 Year Old was introduced in 1909 in a limited edition and it’s likely that these two bottles date from around that time or shortly after.”
