Library bids to serve liquor next to literature
By Melita KielyLiterature and liquor may seem like an unlikely pairing, but if Cullompton Library in Devon gets the thumbs up in its bid for an alcohol license, the two could end up going hand in hand.
The Collumpton Library in Devon could soon be serving alcoholic beverages to guests if its licensing application is approvedManagers at the £3 million Hayridge Centre are eager to be able to serve alcoholic beverages at the venue, particularly cultural events and weddings.
Since it first opened in September 2011, the Hayridge – owned by Devon County Council – has proven extremely popular with local residents.
An application has already been submitted to Mid Devon District Council’s licensing department, and covers the serving of drinks in the state-of-the-art building and part of the outdoor gardening area.
Approval would allow the sale of alcohol of events held at the Hayridge from 10am to 2am Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 10pm on Sundays.
It would also enable the Hayridge to serve alcohol at events it hosts including play performances, film exhibitions, indoor sporting events, live music events, the playing of recorded music and dance performances.
Tim Duxbury, centre manager, told the Mid Devon Gazette: “The license is not to turn the café into a bar but to support the many functions here such as weddings.
“I would like to see people able to enjoy the off glass of wine in our lovely garden when the weather improves.”
