Caskstrength launches 3D whisky with Diageo
By Becky PaskinCaskstrength creative has partnered with Diageo for the fourth instalment in its Alphabet series of whisky bottlings, which will mark the first time 3D printing technology is used for spirits packaging.
3D is the fourth installment in Caskstrength’s Alphabet seriesFor its “D” release, Caskstrength is releasing a 56.4% abv vatting of three Scotch single malt whiskies from Diageo’s stable – Dailuaine, Dalwhinnie and Dufftown – named 3D, blended by Caskstrength founders Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley under the supervision of Diageo master blender Matthew Crow.
Not only does 3D mark the first time the three whiskies have been blended together to form a unique recipe, but it is the first time whisky packaging has involved the use of 3D technology, in more ways than one.
The back label of each bottle contains a QR code which links through to a website where plans for a striking container can be downloaded and printed using a 3D printer.
For those consumers without access to a 3D printer, the edition comes complete with 3D glasses which when worn, reveal a “stereoscopic effect”.
Harrison said: “The three unique elements to this release have made this a hugely exciting project to work on.” He continues: “We feel that the 3D label and downloadable packaging demonstrate just how innovative Scotch whisky can be.”
Nick Morgan, head of whisky outreach at Diageo, said: “We were intrigued by the
innovative and creative concept driving this product and its inventive marketing activation and were readily persuaded to support it on a one-off basis, as another demonstration of the vibrancy and appeal of Scotch whisky.”
Only 504 bottles will be available in the UK through online retailer Master of Malt from 7 November for £49.99.
Caskstrength’s previous release was Caskstrength and Carry On, a collaboration with Cutty Sark blended Scotch whisky for the letter “C”.
