Hine “will not change” under new ownership

François Le Grelle, managing director of Hine Cognac, has promised the house “will not change” despite a takeover from French group EDV SAS.

Francois Le Grelle is adamant that Hine will remain a small producer focused on excellence

Speaking at the house’s 250th anniversary dinner held at Vintners Hall in London last night, Le Grelle confirmed Hine would continue to “only obtain the exceptional” under its new owners.

“You probably knew that Hine was up for sale until a few weeks ago,” he told the hall. “Last June I wrote the following advertisement: Small Cognac House (delicate, elegant) is looking for caring loving buyer to start a long lasting relationship, which should last longer than the next century or two. To demonstrate mutual respect with a certain autonomy while understanding its DNA and savoir faire.”

“Today we know who the successful candidate is and that they fit perfectly with Hine than ever before. We will certainly not change in any way and will continue to look at every detail, and only obtain the exceptional… for this is all we know how to do.”

Hine was sold earlier this month to EDV SAS for an undisclosed sum, although reports from France suggest the transaction was made for between €40-60 million.

The 250th anniversary dinner also marked the unveiling of Hine’s 250 decanter, a limited edition run of 250 bottles of 1953 single barrel Grande Champagne Cognac, which will retail for £9,000 upon its release in October.
