Ian Burrell opens “empowering” rum university
The organisers of The Rum Experience and UK RumFest are launching the inaugural Rum Experience University, an intensive course designed to give bartenders and enthusiasts “a quality rum education”.

The five-day course, taking place in Salobrena on the Andalucian coast, will offer students the chance to gain an officially-recognised diploma qualification.
Led by UK RumFest founder Ian Burrell, The Rum Experience University will provide an in-depth programme of rum studies and excursions covering production, history, cocktails and public speaking., as well as trips to local sugar cane fields and the Pre-Industrial Sugar Cane Museum.
Guest speakers include cocktail historians Anastasia Miller and Jared Brown, food scientist Bernard Lahouse, and Tiki expert Jeff ‘Beachbum’ Berry.
“There has never ever been an official course to become a spirits ambassador, let alone a rum ambassador,” said Burrell. “Too many brand ambassadors are thrown in the deep end and expected to promote categories and brands based on a PowerPoint presentation but without ever having visited the distillery or maturation warehouses where their products are made.
“We are seeking to empower our students with knowledge, and the tools to use that knowledge.”
The inaugural course will take place on 16-20 September 2013, with limited places available for £899 per person. Visit rum-uni.com for more information.
RumFest is returning to London’s ExCel Exhibition Centre on 12-13 October 2013.
