Johnnie Walker Double Black gets permanent US release

Diageo has confirmed that Johnnie Walker Double Black will become a permanent fixture in its US portfolio after an “overwhelmingly positive” response from consumers.

The smoky Scotch was first trialled in travel retail in 2010 before being given a limited edition nationwide release in 2011 – but the popularity of the blend has ensured that it is now here to stay in the States.

“We have seen a dramatic increase in Scotch whisky sales around the world and the response to Johnnie Walker Double Black in the US market has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Brian Radics, Scotch brand director at Diageo North America.

“We are proud to bring this previously unexplored category of exceptionally smoky blends to our consumers for their responsible enjoyment.”

The product was created using Scottish whiskies hand-picked by master blender Jim Beveridge for their “hints of smouldering charcoal” and “undertones of dried fruit” before being matured in deep-charred oak barrels.

“The deeper, more intense flavours of Johnnie Walker Double Black derive from the combination of selected aged, naturally smoky whiskies all carefully blended to bring out the smokiest flavours,” said Beveridge.

“It took our blending team years to perfect, but when we found the right combination, we knew this was the next step for Johnnie Walker.”

Johnnie Walker Double Black is now available nationwide in the US with a suggested retail price of US$40.
