Hine Cognac hoists up for sale sign
By Becky PaskinThe UK’s CL World Brands has put Hine Cognac up for sale, just as the house celebrates its 250th anniversary, The Spirits Business understands.
Hine Cognac is for saleCL World Brands, a subsidiary of the Trinidad & Tobago-based CL Financial Ltd, is currently seeking a buyer for the Cognac house, which produces a range of limited release vintage eaux-de-vie.
Francois Le Grelle, managing director of Hine, confirmed the move but declined to comment further on proceedings. However he added that the group was yet to meet with any potential buyers.
The news comes just days after CL World brands relinquished its stake in Burn Stewart Distillers to South African group Distell, marking the latter’s first foray into Scotch.
The Burn Stewart portfolio sold includes Bunnahabhain and Tobermory single malts, as well as the blended whiskies.
Last September, CL World Brands also sold a majority stake in Appleton Estate’s parent company Lascelles deMercado to Gruppo Campari.
Hine Cognac was founded in Jarnac in 1763. This year the house will celebrate its 250th anniversary with an exhibition in Jarnac in June, a series of gala dinners and the release of a limited edition decanter created by a “top designer”.
