Coca Blue decanter auctioned for Alan Lodge charity

A rare decanter of Coca Blue liqueur, worth £1,000, is being auctioned off to raise funds for the Alan Lodge Brain Appeal.

A decanter of Coca Blue, worth around £1,000, is being auctioned in memory of former SB deputy editor Alan Lodge

Just 20 of the rare crystal decanters have been produced especially to commemorate the end of the Mayan calendar – and supposed End of the World – on 21 December 2012.

Two decanters have been presented to Princess Maxima of The Netherlands, where Babco is based, and to Bolivian President Evo Morales.

Of the remaining 18, one has been kindly donated by drinks group Babco to raise money for the fund set up in the late Spirits Business deputy editor’s name.

The liqueur is made using 100% Bolivian coca leaves – the raw source of cocaine – which are picked at 2000 metres above sea level where the air pressure forces the leaves to grow smaller and richer in flavour.

The leaves are macerated, decocanised and distilled to produce a 55.5% abv liqueur with a blue hue, reminiscent of the favoured pigment chosen by the Mayan potteries and artists.

The flavour is described as “amazingly smooth on the palate, powerful and unforgettable”.

The eBay auction, which kicks off at £500, is set to end on 19 December, allowing time for the winning bidder to receive their Coca Blue decanter before the End of the World begins.
