Record prices expected in Macallan auction
By Andy YoungRare bottles from the collection of former chairman Allan Snaich to be sold in Glasgow.
Two bottles of 50-year-old Macallan will be sold at auction in Glasgow
The Chairman’s Collection, which has been labelled, “one of the finest private collections of Macallan whisky”, features 72 bottles of the Highland Scotch whisky.
It is expected that record prices will be achieved at the auction, which takes place at McTear’s auction house in Glasgow on Wednesday.
Included in the lots for sale will be two bottles of the Macallan Anniversary 50 year old – distilled in 1928 and worth £10,000 each – and a 1951 whisky, which could fetch £3,000; there will also be two rare bottles of 1946 Macallan.
Snaich said: “These whiskies are a slightly random selection of bottlings which particularly interested me in the marketing of the brand.
“They have been kept at my home in Moray and now, realising they were too valuable to drink and too rare to replace, I decided to share the proceeds of the sale with a charity and to offer worldwide collectors an opportunity to enhance their inventory with some Macallan items not often seen.”
Commenting on the sale, McTear’s whisky specialist, Stephen McGinty, said: “This is not merely an exclusive selection from one of the iconic Highland distilleries, but a reflection of one man’s lifelong dedication to style, quality and tradition.
“From two world renowned 50 year olds to a brace of magnificent magnums, the range and diversity is breathtaking and confirms this selection of whiskies as one of the finest collections of Macallan ever to come to auction.”
