President Obama set to enjoy Tasmanian whisky

The US Ambassador to Australia is planning to take Tasmanian whisky stateside for President Barack Obama.

President Barack Obama will be introduced to Tasmanian whisky by the US Ambassador to Australia

The reputation of Tasmanian whisky is improving and Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich is hoping to add President Obama to the growing fan base.

Bleich has become a convert and has said he plans to pick up some bottles on his next trip to the island, which he will be giving to the president.

Ambassador Bleich said: “He likes a whisky. I’ve already promised I’m going to bring back some Tasmanian whisky with me.

“I think it’s a very good thing that I’m in Canberra and can’t live here in Hobart because I love Tasmanian whisky a little too much,”

There are currently eight distilleries and two bottlers on Tasmania and the latest figures show these account for around 80% of Australia’s whisky production.

Sullivan’s Cove French Oak cask HH509, which is produced by the Tasmania Distillery, was recently voted the southern hemisphere’s best whisky by Jim Murray’s 2013 whisky bible.
