Alltech opens first new Lexington distillery in 100 years

Alltech Spirits has opened a new distillery in Lexington, Kentucky, the first to be built in the town for more than 100 years.

The Town Branch Distillery in Lexington is the seventh addition to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Built in the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass region the 20,000 square foot facility will be the production site for Alltech’s Town Branch Bourbon, Pearse Lyons Reserve malt whiskey and bourbon-infused coffee drink, Bluegrass Sundown.

The US$9.2m distillery is one of the few sites in the world to house both a brewery and a distillery in the same location. The new distillery is already part of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, which welcomed nearly 500,000 visitors from all over the world in 2011. Alltech’s distillery will be available for visitors seven days a week after it officially opens on 1 October.

Dr Pearse Lyons, founder and president of Alltech, said: “Our new Lexington distillery will now draw tourists directly into the heart of the Bluegrass, and we have high expectations for how this may economically impact our city.

“Bourbon has traditionally been a rural attraction, yet many of our legendary distilleries draw upwards of 100,000 visitors a year. That’s because bourbon is no longer just a drink – it’s an experience, a lifestyle and a part of our culture.”

In September Alltech shipped two large stills to the Carlow Brewing Company at Bagenalstown in Ireland, forming part of Ireland’s fifth major whiskey distillery.
