Wemyss Malts creates first premium blended Scotch Lord Elcho

Wemyss Malts is breaking into the premium bended Scotch market with 15 year-old Scotch, Lord Elcho.

Lord Elcho by Wemyss Malts is set for roll out this month

Named after Wemyss Malts founder’s 18th Century ancestor, who was stripped of his title and exiled to France for his part in the Jacobite uprising in 1745, Lord Elcho is described by the company as ‘rich, smooth and aged to perfection’.

Due for roll out to specialist whisky shops in the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Taiwan soon, Lord Elcho has an abv of 40% and is priced at around £49.50.

Blended from a selection of malt and grain whiskies, with an emphasis on alt aged in sherry casks, the whisky is the first premium blended expression from Wemyss Malts.

It is also the second time the company has used its ancestry to name an expression, following the 2010 launch of Darnley’s View gin, which commemorates the first meeting in 1565 of Mary Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley at Wemyss Castle in Fife.

William Wemyss, founder and managing director at Wemyss Malts, said: “The continued growth of Scotch whisky across the world has encouraged us to launch our first entrant into the blended Scotch segment. The story of my ancestor has provided us with an authentic and compelling story to build a new brand for our range.”

Wemyss Malts also currently produces other blended malts including The Spice King, The Peat Chimney and The Hive, as well as other single malt single cask bottlings.
