Remy Martin Black Pearl Cognac auctions for £10,350

A bottle of Remy Martin’s Black Pearl Cognac has sold at auction for £10,350 – twice what it was originally estimated to reach.

The bottle of Remy Martin’s Black Pearl Cognac has spent years at sea in a shopping mall on-board a luxury cruise liner

According to London auction house Bonham’s, the Remy Martin Louis XIII Black Pearl Cognac, which has spent years aboard a luxury cruise liner, received ‘fierce’ bidding.

Made using a blend of 1200 eaux de vie aged between 40-100 years in oak barrels, Black Pearl is bottled in a limited edition black Baccarat crystal decanter. Bonham’s estimated the bottle up for auction to be worth between £5,000-7,000.

After spending several years traveling the world in a shopping mall on-board a luxury cruise-liner, the bottle was spotted and purchased by a South African bar manager cruising in the Mediterranean.

Other items sold in the auction on 13 September, included a bottle of Pierre Ferrand Cognac, Reserve Marie Domain from 1806, sold for £3,910 against a pre-sale estimate of £1,800-2,200, and a bottle of 1811 Napoléon Grande Fine Champagne Cognac sold for £2,530 against a pre-sale estimate of £1,000-1,500.

A third bottle, a J&F Martell 260th Anniversary Cognac, sold for £1,840, over three times the pre-sale estimate of £500 – 600.

Richard Harvey, international director of Bonhams Wine department, said: “We have had excellent results for the Cognac in this sale and are pleased to see so many rare bottles exceeding their pre-sale estimates. The success of the sale only goes to show that the Cognac market embraces buyers in many different countries. It has been great to see rare bottles, including some over 200 years old, make such high prices”.
