Energy drinks tame aggressive drinkers
By Becky PaskinDrinkers are less likely to become aggressive and engage in casual sex if they mix their spirit of choice with an energy drink.
Red Bull Energy Drink may help tame aggressive drinkers
A study of 403 young Australian adults by the University of Tasmania found that energy drinks appeared to stem impulsive, risk-taking behaviour often associated with drinking, when mixed with spirits.
“People reported engaging in risk-taking behaviour such as driving while intoxicated, casual sex, using illicit drugs and engaging in verbal or physical aggression during both alcohol drinking sessions and mixed alcohol and energy drink sessions,” said psychology PhD student Amy Peacock, who conducted the trial on 18-35 year-olds.
“But the odds of these risk behaviours occurring were lower when using the mixed drinks.”
The survey also found that energy drinks, which are most commonly mixed with vodka, appeared to counter the sedative effects of alcohol, including slurred speech, loss of balance and nausea.
However those drinkers mixing energy drinks with spirits were found to be more irritable and felt less inclined to be sociable.
The study concluded that mixing spirits with energy drinks produced negative physical and psychological effects.
