Rare Malt Mill bottle goes on public display

The world’s last known surviving bottle of Malt Mill, the Islay Scotch making an appearance in Ken Loach’s film The Angels’ Share, is to be displayed at Diageo’s Lagavulin distillery.

The last known bottling of Malt Mill Islay whisky

Hidden away and forgotten about for years, the 1962 bottle of Malt Mill is thought to be the last bottled before production ceased at Lagavulin.

Georgie Crawford, Lagavulin distillery manager, was passed on the rare bottle from her predecessor but has now taken the decision to bring the rare bottle out of storage having heard about it’s appearance in the Cannes Jury Prize-winning film.

“In my twenty years as an historian and archivist, I’ve always wanted to see this unique bottle of Malt Mill go on display,” said Dr Nick Morgan, head of whisky outreach at Diageo. “We are thrilled to share this precious artefact with the many whisky enthusiasts who visit Lagavulin every year.”

The Angels’ Share, which was filmed at various locations around Scotland, hinges around the auction of the imaginary final cask of Malt Mill, thought by many to be ‘the holy grail’ of whiskies.

The last bottling will now go on display at the Lagavulin distillery for visitors to see.
