Caorunn looks for world’s best storyteller
By Marinel FitzSimonsCaorunn Gin has launched a new cocktail competition called “Caorunn Storytellers Global Cocktail Challenge”.
The idea behind the competition to encourage mixologists and bartenders to create a drink that has a story behind it – which they will be judged on, as well as on taste, presentation and relevance to Caorunn.
The competition invited contestants to make a “modern classic” that has heritage, and uses at least one of the five botanicals used to make Caorunn; rowan berry, coul blush apple, bog myrtle, heather and dandelion.
Caorunn brand manager, Ibolya Bakos, commented: “Caorunn is delighted to launch this innovative new competition to champion creativity across the globe. Recreating a cocktail which fuses the traditional with the contemporary perfectly ties in with Caorunn’s reputation as modern, sophisticated gin with a rich heritage. The initiative is also the perfect platform to showcase bartending as the art form that it has become.”
The competition is running in five countries; the US, the UK, Spain, Scotland and Australia. The US national heats have already taken place, and the winner will be announced at the Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans on 26 July. The Spanish and British heats are next, with the national finals in Lavinia, Madrid, on 12 June, and Worship Street Whistling Shop, London, 2 July respectively.
National winners will be flown to Scotland for the Grand Final on 3 September, held at Bramble in Edinburgh, where the contestants will be judged by a panel led by Simon Difford.
The overall winner will receive £1,500, and will be named the Caorunn Global Storyteller 2012, and their cocktail will be promoted as an official Caorunn drink.
National winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Speyside, home of Caorunn.
Candidates can now apply in all participating countries. For more details and to enter, go to www.caorunngin.com/storytellers. The deadline for Spanish entries is 25 April, and 6 June for the UK and Scotland. Details for Australia are yet to be confirmed.
