Ivan Menezes becomes COO for Diageo
Diageo has promoted its top man in North America to the position of chief operating officer (COO) in a move which makes him a likely successor to CEO Paul Walsh.
Ivan Menezes takes up the post tomorrow (1 March) and will lead the drinks multi-national’s operating businesses globally, with Larry Schwartz taking his old job of president, North America.
Menezes will now also cover Europe and Africa, adding to his existing responsibility for North America, Asia Pacific and Latin America & Caribbean.
“Given our strong performance momentum and the scope and scale of our ambition, the Diageo board and I agree that now is the right time to extend Ivan’s remit to embrace all of our markets globally,” said Diageo CEO Paul Walsh.
Menezes has led Diageo’s North American operations for eight years.
The new appointment marks him out as a possible successor to Walsh as CEO – Walsh himself was appointed Diageo COO in January 2000, before moving up to the CEO position later that year.
