Bols Around the World countdown has started

The Bols Around the World sixth international cocktail competition has now opened its virtual doors to contestants for its first heat.

The competition has already attracted candidates from 53 countries.

The aim of the competition is to encourage and support young mixologists (all contestants must be 23 or younger) from across the world.

The first three rounds are all run via the internet, meaning that young cocktail enthusiasts can enter from wherever they are based in the world at no cost to them.

The first heat requires participants to submit a cocktail recipe which is assessed for balance and harmony. The top ten recipes from each region will be selected to go through to the next round, which is an online theory test, assessing candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the art of bartending.

The three top scorers will then progress to the next level, which requires them to upload a short film that “entertains, educates, inspires and ultimately convinces” the judges to select that mixologists over his/her peers.

The 12 winners who will have demonstrated their passion and talent for their art through the medium of film will then make it through to the grand final inAmsterdamon 12 May.

The final, which lasts three days, will be judged by Hidetsugu Ueno, owner and bartender of Bar High Five, Tokyo, Helmut Adam, co-owner of Mixology Magazine and Bar Convent, Berlin, Jared Brown and Anistatia Miller, directors of Mixellany Limited, Jeff Berry (a.k.a. Beach Bum Berry), co-owner of Faux Tropical Bar School and global Tiki expert, and Rob Rademaker, head trainer at the Bols Bartending Academy and Bols global brand ambassador.

The prize for the overall winner is an eight day global bar tour visiting the best cocktail bars in four cocktail capitals of the winner’s choice as well as a Bols platinum ambassadorship, which comprises two trips to Amsterdam for intensive training and an all-expenses paid visit to a bar show.

The 11 finalists will receive a one-year Bols gold ambassadorship, which includes a training trip to Amsterdam and an honorary contract to represent Bols in their own country. All regional winners are announced on the competition website and will receive a Bols Around the World National Champion Trophy and a limited edition Bols Barrel Aged Genever, signed by master distiller, Piet Leijenhorst.

The deadline for the first round is Thursday 15 March.
