Mackmyra opens new distillery

Swedish whisky company Mackmyra will tomorrow unveil its new distillery with a bang when it holds a party complete with fireworks.

The new distillery,  in an area known as the Mackmyra Whisky Village, will catapult the independent company in to the single malt whisky super league. It will quadruple production for the company from 300,000 litres to 1.2 million litres, and all the output will go to single malt.
When you consider that most Scottish distilleries produce malt primarily for blended whisky (about 90 per cent) and the biggest distilleries at Roseisle, Glenfiddich, and Glenlivet produce about 10 million litres of spirit annually, the new Swedish facility is one of the biggest single malt whisky producers in the world.
Mackmyra has just released Special Number 7, two new whiskies in its specialist Moment series, and Vit Hund, which is a new make spirit named after the American name for new make spirits: White Dog.
The new facility is about one and a half hours drive from Arland Airport and in keeping with its main maturation plant, the company has built new maturation facilities underground.
Mackmyra is now planning to export its distinctive high quality single malt on an international level.
The distillery was started about 10 years ago by a group of friends and has grown to be the biggest thing in Sweden since Abba and Volvo. New bottlings, sold through state liquor companies, sell out in hours of their release.
The new distillery will be officially opened tomorrow night with a special party.
