Watch contains drops of ‘world’s oldest Cognac’

A Swiss watchmaker and corporate collector have teamed up to create a timepiece containing what is thought to be the world’s oldest Cognac sold at auction.

Drops of the Cognac, which dates back to 1762, are contained in a sealed sapphire crystal disc positioned at 5 o’clock.

On the back of the watch face is a hand-engraved design of a bunch of grapes.

Swiss watchmaker Armin Strom and corporate collector Wealth Solutions will release 40 watches in stainless steel, 18 carat rose gold and titanium cases.

The design will be presented for the first time on 20 March, during leading timepiece event Basel World 2016.

In November last year, Wealth Solutions celebrated its partnership with Armin Storm by opening the 1762 Gautier Cognac – regarded as the world’s oldest Cognac sold at auction.

The Cognac smashed its estimated sale of US$20,000-US$25,000 when it sold at Bonhams New York’s Whisky, Cognac and Rare Spirits auction in 2014 for US$60,000.

Bottled in 1840, the Cognac features an original handwritten label.
