Macallan verticals fetch HK$1.3m

Sotheby’s Hong Kong saw 2016 off to a positive start, with the first Finest and Rarest Wines auction of the year propelling a series of Macallan verticals to sell for HK$1.3m.

The combined Macallan lots sold for HK$1.3 million

Split into seven lots, the rare Macallan bottlings featured an expression distilled in every year from 1945 to 1986.

The top lot was the 1945-1950 vertical, which sold for HK$318,500 (about GBP28,600 / US$41,000).

The seven lots sold for a total of HK$1.3 million (about GBP116,970 / US$167,100).

Adam Bilbey, Head of Sotheby’s Wine Asia, commented: “We are very encouraged by the opening sale of the year in Hong Kong with a packed saleroom seeing keen interest across Asia.

“100% of the whiskies were sold, highlighted by the Macallan verticals which achieved an aggregate total of HK$1,372,000 (about GBP123,400 / US$176,300), well over the high estimate [of] HK$1,185,000 (about GBP106,550 / US$152,300).

“We now look forward to our next wine sale in London on 24 February and of course our upcoming Hong Kong wine sale on 2 April during the spring sale series at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.”

Among last year’s Sotheby’s spirits highlights was a bottle of 70-year-old Armenian Ararat brandy, sold at a London auction for £80,000 (more than US$120,000).
