The Lord Mayor of the City of London Fiona Woolf joined guests at the micro distillery for the launch of Square Mile Gin on Tuesday evening.

“What a delightful spot this is,” commented Woolf in her opening speech. “It’s wonderful to keep some traditions that take us to our past.

“It’s a statement to the past, present and future of the city and the distillers as both a craft, mystery and a profession.

“It’s just perfect for the City of London combining our historic roots that are not only relevant, but a lot of fun. That is what the city is all about.”

Historically, The Square Mile was brimming with distillers, with one in every five houses being either a distillery or bar.

Bottled at 47% abv, Square Mile Gin is made using eight botanicals to create a “great citrus” flavour and “rounded” gin.

The bottle is clear glass with a black map of The Square Mile embossed on the bottle.

“The actual whole place of The Square Mile to me, is gin,” said Jonathan Clark, founder of the City of London Distillery. “It’s history here is just unbelievable.

“I am going to focus on promoting the gin for the time being with The Square Mile of London.

“I want people to see that I love the fact we are a small craft distillery that is actually doing it in the City of London.

“I am so grateful to all the distillers who help me so much – this would not have been possible without them.”
