Disused tube stations eyed as new bar venues

Disused London Tube stations which have lay dormant since the Second World War could house some of the city’s newest bars if plans are approved.

A UK businessman has made a bid to turn London’s disused tube stations into underground bars and restaurants

UK businessman Ajit Chambers has been lobbying Transport for London over the past five years in a bid to turn the subterranean stations into a number of bars, restaurants and museums, according to Bloomberg.

He estimates that there are about 26 tube stations which have been disused since the 1940s and 50s, worth about £1 billion in total.

“What I really want is that they become ultimate tourist attractions in London,” Chambers told Bloomberg. He added that he is already planning an investment strategy for the sites.

Transport for London, which owns the stations, said that it would not consider selling the stations entirely, but would consider if other parts of the sites could be used.

In May this year, London received a new highest bar – Gong – which is situated at the Shangri-La Hotel in The Shard.
