William Grant & Sons tops Scotland’s rich list

The Grant Gordon whisky family, which owns William Grant & Sons, has topped the list of the richest people living in Scotland.

With a fortune of £1.9 billion, the family was named as the wealthiest in the annual Sunday Times Rich List, printed yesterday.

According to the list, Scotland’s richest people have seen their bank balances swell faster than the rest of Britain’s richest.

Last year, the wealthiest 100 men and women saw their wealth increase by 19% to £25 billion.

Throughout the UK combined, the richest 1,000 saw their wealth increase by 15.4%.

“The richest have had an astonishing year,” commented Philip Beresford, who compiled the list.

“While many will criticise them, many of these people are at the heart of the economy and their success brings more jobs and more wealth for the country.”
