First whisky cask to auction in HK fetches $800k

The first cask of whisky ever to be sold at public auction in Hong Kong – a 25-year-old barrel of The Macallan Scotch – has been bought for HK$793,000.

Spink China sold the first cask of whisky at auction in Hong Kong for almost HK$800,000

The single cask, which was filled in 1989, sold at auctioneers Spink China on 19 April exceeding its presale estimate of HK$650,000 – 750,000.

According to local newspaper the South China Morning Post, the buyer has yet to announce whether he intends to bottle the whisky or let it continue aging.

If emptied, the cask is able to fill 174 standard 100ml bottles.

Other items sold as part of the auction include Silver Seal crystal decanters of Ardbeg, Bunnahabain, Highland Park, and The Macallan Scotch whiskies.

All were sold during Spink’s Silver Seal & Independent Bottlers Single Malt Whisky and Rum Event.

A six-litre decanter of The Macallan M recently broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s most expensive whisky when it sold at auction in Hong Kong for £381,620.
