A US bartender got the shock of her life when she was given a lottery ticket as a tip – and won US$17,500.

Aurora Kephart who works at Conway’s Restaurant and Lounge in Springfield, Oregon, was given two lottery tickets as a tip by one of her regular guests.

When she checked the numbers, the first lottery ticket won $5, while the second won $17,500.

“The look on his face was incredible,” Kephart told The Register-Guard newspaper. “I automatically handed it back to him; it was his ticket.”

But the patron wouldn’t accept the ticket, and made Kephart sign it so only she could collect the winnings.

Kephart went straight back to work after discovering the win, and claimed her prize money the next day.

She did however give a portion of the winnings back to her benefactor. “I just couldn’t not give him some of it,” she said.

Kephart reportedly plans to buy herself a new couch with her tip, and save the rest.
