Glenmorangie Artein – latest in the Private Edition

Glenmorangie has released the third expression in its Private Edition range.

The new release, called Artein (Scot’s Gaelic for “stone”) consists of a blend of 15 and 21 year old single malts, extra matured in Super Tuscan wine casks.

The name, Artein, was chosen to reflect the importance and prominence of stones in the whisky making process in Glenmorangie. The water used, which comes from the distillery’s own source – the Tarlogie spring – is hard and filters through layers of Limestone. The name is also a nod to the Hilton of Cadboll Stone, an ancient stone of symbolic significance which stands next to the distillery.

In addition, head of distillery and whisky creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, who is responsible for the latest expression, is fascinated and inspired by the role of stony soil in the production of Super Tuscan wines.

Dr Lumsden explained: “Wine is one of my huge passions and I was fascinated by the role stony ground played in cultivating the vines – therefore influencing the flavour profile of the famed Super Tuscan wines. I was inspired to experiment with extra maturing Glenmorangie in these wine casks and was thrilled with the result – a rich, outstandingly fragrant whisky – born of stone.”

The single males used in Artein have all been matured in American ex-bourbon white oak casks, then further matured in the Super Tuscan wine casks.

At 46%, the spirit is available globally and retails in the UK in specialist retailers for £69.99.

Artein joins Finealta and Sonnalta in the Private Edition.
