Caperdonich whisky collection goes on sale

Online auction house Whisky Auctioneer is offering more than 70 whiskies from the closed Caperdonich distillery in its latest sale.

Whisky Auctioneer will offer expressions from the closed Caperdonich distillery

The auction, which goes live today (30 October), features one of the largest collections of whiskies from silent Speyside distillery Caperdonich. The auction will run until 9 November.

Of the Caperdonich whiskies listed, 63 are from a single owner’s private collection. Some highlights include independent bottlings from Jack Wieber and Prestonfield House, more than 40 expressions aged for at least 35 years, and one of only five bottles of a private cask blend.

Initially opened as an expansion for the Glen Grant distillery, the site was named Caperdonich in 1967. After several acquisitions, the distillery closed in the early 2000s and was demolished in 2011.

Joe Wilson, head of auction content at Whisky Auctioneer, said: “The history of Caperdonich is truly captivating and these bottles are rare sightings on the secondary market. A collection of this significance from a distillery as elusive as Caperdonich in a single auction is an exciting discovery and offers a unique opportunity for our global audience of whisky enthusiasts, and in particular, collectors of whisky from Scotland’s lost distilleries.

“Independent bottlings like these offer a fascinating insight into the secrets of a Speyside distillery that otherwise could so easily have only been a footnote in the story of Glen Grant distillery. Over recent months, we have witnessed an increase in the demand for liquid from Caperdonich and so we are sure that these bottles will attract a huge appeal.”

The latest Whisky Auctioneer sale also features expressions from the closed Glenugie, Dallas Dhu and Port Ellen distilleries. Other stand-out whiskies include the newly-launched Macallan Red Collection and the Speyside distiller’s 72 Year Old Lalique Genesis Decanter.

The auction also includes more than 130 Glendronach whiskies from Pat’s Whisk(e)y Collection, which is thought to be the “world’s largest” private whisky collection to be offered at auction.
