Glenrothes 40 Year Old rolls out globally

The oldest whisky from The Glenrothes distillery – a 40-year-old expression – has been launched globally and via an online ballot.

The Glenrothes 40 Year Old will be available in selected retail outlets around the world

The one-of-a-kind whisky was distilled in December 1978 in copper pot stills that were replaced soon after this date. It was then matured in various Sherry-seasoned and ex-Bourbon casks.

Just 594 bottles were released through London merchant Berry Bros & Rudd at the start of October. From today (15 November), the 40-year-old will be available globally in selected retail outlets and via a ballot at www.theglenrothes.com.

“Forty years ago The Glenrothes distillery was different in many ways, yet our whisky character remains unchanged,” said Gordon Motion, master whisky maker for The Glenrothes.

“The release of our new 40-year-old single malt takes us back in time and celebrates the end of an era with the closure of the original still house.

“It has been a truly rewarding experience to incorporate some of the last remaining spirit from this time. The very fact that it was created in a place which no longer produces whisky highlights the real rarity of this expression.”

The Glenrothes 40 Year Old is bottled at 43% ABV and is priced at £2,950 (US$3,800).
